Special Garden is a set of three ceramic vessels measuring 6 x 4”, 4 x 6”, and 6 x 4”, with circular shapes protruding from the front. The center of each incases a different sculpted herb. The herbs of focus sage (protection, healing, and longevity), ivy (eternity, fidelity, and strong affectionate attachment), and rosemary (love, remembrance, and happiness) combine to give a feeling of comfort and positivity. Their message was the most important aspect as I wanted one that anyone can resonate with.
Each vessel is marked by an herb (sage, ivy, or rosemary) in the center of an asymmetrical circle. ‘Special Garden’ is unified by the same application of green and white glazes giving the surface an iridescent appearance. An irregular frame draws the eye into the center, where each sculpted herb sits. Inside each frame is white, adding emphasis to the herbs. Sculpted herbs are varying tones of green bringing them to life. Color, combined with the organic shapes, mimics that of nature. Each piece is small creating an intimate viewing experience that can lead to a connection between the viewer and the herbs.
Prior to construction research into herbs’ symbolism was conducted. I developed numerous preparatory sketches, resolving the composition. From a slab, I formed three cylindrical shapes, and attached frames. Referencing online images and the actual herbs I carefully sculpted, attached, and painted them. Glaze had the role of unifying the set. I layered different glazes on test tiles before applying it to the pieces.
Ken Eastman’s ‘Vessel’ is a prominent influence on the construction of ‘Special Garden’. Eastman is an artist who works mainly in slab construction, creating organic abstract forms. ‘Vessel’ is cylindrical, with a circular piece on the front. The form combined with the pop of white in the center is what piqued my interest. In ‘Special Garden’ I altered Eastman’s design to better fit my concept. Individually in ‘Special Garden’, the herbs give a warm comforting energy with messages of love, wisdom, and good wishes. Together, they give off a unified message of positivity and love.
‘Special Garden’ is meant to offer viewers a safe contemplative space. The soft greens paired with the organic forms welcome the viewer into this space. Any thought or emotion that comes from the viewer will be met with solace. Each vessel can stand alone or be displayed together, any arrangement delivering its own special message.
